CHAPTER SIX

PORCH LIGHT

Now that you have learned how to use window light and, more importantly, to see the light, you are ready for the next step in this journey of mastering available light. We will turn our attention to working in an area with an overhang—like a roof or an awning—to block overhead light. In these examples, I will show how shooting under an awning or on a porch—for simplicity’s sake, we’ll call it porch light—where light is blocked from overhead, can yield soft, directional lighting that will flatter your subjects.

Light that streams across a porch is like the light coming through a window. What makes porch light so great is that, when you and your subject are positioned so that you are shooting down the length of the porch, the majority of the light comes from one direction—the side opposite the house. Because the house itself blocks the light from striking the subject on one side, the light will not be flat.
